HYDROTHERAPY F.A.Qs
Can I just turn up with my dog?
No, all dogs need to have a prior booking, they also need a Vet Referral form completed by a vet. This ensures we know what conditions/injuries the dog has and also that the vet is happy for the dog to receive Hydrotherapy. This includes dogs swimming for fun and fitness, in which case our recommended vet is able for a small fee to assess your dog and provide a vet referral.
Does my dog need to be vaccinated before it can swim?
All dogs must have an up to date vaccination certificate prior to swimming. This should be brought and checked at your dogs vet referral.
Can I feed my dog before swimming?
Please do not feed your dog at least 3 hours prior to swimming and at least one hour after swimming.
Is Hydrotherapy covered by my Pet Insurance?
Most Pet Insurers cover Hydrotherapy carried out here as we are Members of the Canine Hydrotherapy Association, but you must check with them prior to starting hydrotherapy. You will be responsible for payment of your dogs session(s), a receipt will be provided for you to make a claim on your insurance.
Do you use any chemicals in your pool?
We use Chlorine as a sanitiser this is kept to approved levels, tested and logged several times a day. The pool water is maintained to a ‘Human’ standard.
How long does a session last?
The length of swim sessions depends on your dog's condition, needs and ability. This may vary from only a few minutes in the pool initially up to 30 minutes as your dog’s condition or fitness improves. This is totally dependent on the dog itself, all sessions are tailored to the individual dog. We do not impose a fixed time - this could be detrimental to the dog.
My dog is a good swimmer and can swim for longer than 30 minutes, so why is their session shorter?
It is much easier for a dog to ‘Free Swim’ than it is to swim in a hydro pool where they have to use a lot more energy as the water is warm and so they tire quickly.
My dog does not like water/has not swum before, what happens if they can’t swim?
Most dogs take to swimming easily although the first few sessions can be a bit splashy as they find their own ‘Style’. All new dogs will have some form of buoyancy aid on whilst in the pool, Jackets are available for all sizes of dog. All dogs will have a harness on - this is so we can get your dog out quickly in event of an emergency - hydrotherapy needs to be controlled to ensure dogs do not aggravate any injury.
What if my dog has a medical problem whilst swimming?
Should your dog experience any medical problems whilst swimming a trained Hydrotherapist and animal First Aider is in attendance at all times when a dog is in the pool. K9 Fit Fur Fun also has 24 hour contact with a nearby emergency vet ensuring prompt medical attention is on hand.
Can I swim with my dog?
A trained Hydrotherapist is present during all swims. The Hydrotherapist, where necessary, will enter the water with the dog to provide the necessary treatment. In the interests of health and safety, we require for the first session owners are not permitted to stay within the hydro room. It may be necessary for subsequent sessions for for owners to assist in ensuring the dog feels at ease and in encouraging a hesitant dog to swim. Under no circumstances are owners allow in the pool.
How many dogs can be exercised on the treadmill at one time?
Only 1 animal can be treated at a time on the treadmill. The main reason for this is the lack of space within the chamber, also every animal requires a different treatment regime. As the treadmill can only cope with one treatment plan at a time, it makes it impossible for any more than 1 animal to be exercised on it at any one time.
